Is There Still Such A Thing As A Cheap Holiday?

Added: October 31, 2008
You would be forgiven for thinking that there wasn’t. The big problems - and expenses - can come when you are thinking of going abroad. No matter where you live, as soon as you decide to visit another country you have exchange rates to think about.

This is often where the big expenses come in.  Even if booking the holiday is reasonably cheap, you can end up getting stung by the cost of living and the poor exchange rates with the currency of that country.  That’s why it pays to research more than just the basic holiday price itself when you are considering going away.

You should always start narrowing down your list of places to go first though, and there are plenty of websites that will help you do this.  One of them is Travel Supermarket, which comes from the same people that run Money Supermarket.  You can visit the site at http://www.travelsupermarket.com.  It enables you to compare various holidays, and is just one of several sites online that have this same purpose.

If you want to go abroad, start thinking about the countries that will provide the cheapest cost of living as well as the cheapest flights to get there.  The current state of the economy means that many countries are experiencing a rise in the cost of living.  However this doesn’t mean you have to buy an expensive holiday.

All you need to do is find a country where the cost of living is still less than it is where you live.  Even if this is expensive for the people who live there, you will notice the difference.

Some quick research on the internet should reveal how much you might be expected to pay for the basics in another country.  Think about things you will need, such as a meal out, drinks, car hire and so on.

It stands to reason that the cheapest holiday will be the one with the least amount of facilities.  But you need to think about what standard of accommodation you want as well.  Cheap can mean nasty if you aren’t careful!

So can you still go on holiday on the cheap, even if your own currency isn’t buying you the same amount of foreign currency as it used to?  You can, but this will depend on where you live.

It might seem like a strange place to start looking for a break, but have you considered experimenting with a currency converter?  Even though the rates are changing all the time, you can look to see where your own currency goes further.  When you consider that some people take a lot in spending money with them on a fortnight’s holiday, you can save a lot of money by visiting somewhere that gives you great value for money.

And if you find somewhere you like and the rate is good, make sure you get your holiday money as soon as you have booked your break.  You can’t guarantee that you would be able to benefit from that same exchange rate even the same time next week, let alone in a few months time.

So are there any other pointers for booking a cheap holiday?

Well, online deals can still be cheaper than offline ones, and it’s also much easier to search and compare various possibilities.  You can also often get bargains at the last minute if you are prepared to travel at short notice.  A lot depends on how flexible you can be.

In the end, some people will put a hold on their foreign holidays while the economic situation is so uncertain.  They would rather save the money for emergencies than spend it on something that could be considered frivolous by some.

And yet what better way to escape from all the doom and gloom than to enjoy a refreshing break away from it all?  The moral is clear – while holidays in certain countries may well be more expensive thanks to the fluctuating exchange rates, there are still bargains to be found here and there.  The way to find them is simply to do your homework.  Don’t assume that travel agents will do it all for you.

There is one other option of course, and that is to stay in the same country you live in.  Many of us are so determined to go abroad on holiday that we miss many of the sights our own country has to offer.  And of course you will have more knowledge of where to go and what to do to keep those costs down.
