Could Your Business Survive A Recession?
It’s looking more and more likely that the world is going to experience a recession – and soon. The currency markets are behaving like the worst (or best) rollercoaster ride in history. Everyone is tightening their belts. And it looks like there is plenty more to come too.
Some people are worrying about whether their earnings are going to cover their outgoings – and indeed whether they will keep their jobs at all. Others, meanwhile, have a whole business to consider. One of the best websites to use to keep up with the current news as it happens is http://www.bloomberg.com. This is particularly good to use because it talks to the big figures that have extensive experience or a key role to play when it comes to the global economy. Keep an eye on it and access the different areas of the world to dig deeper into the news that affects each region.
If you are self employed then you do have an advantage in a recession. You have total control over your incomings and outgoings, and as such you don’t need to worry about whether you will keep your job or not. But you do have a responsibility to make sure your business keeps thriving.
One of the biggest concerns you will have is overheads. If you import stock from abroad you may well be affected by the fluctuating exchange rates. Some businesses have found that foreign companies have had to put their prices up due to the problems the economy is going through. When you combine this with the fact that the exchange rate with that particular country might be going against your own currency, it can get very expensive to stay in business.
That’s why it’s worth spending time searching for new suppliers, even if you don’t actually use them straightaway. Staying in business is perfectly possible during a recession. Think back to the last recession we went through, for example. I’m sure you can think of some businesses that went under during that time. But you can probably also think of ones that never seemed to be affected by it at all.
You can guarantee that those businesses were the ones that did their homework. They prepared for the storm that was to come and did all they could to get through it. And because of that, some of them actually weathered it very well.
You could do the same if we do end up having the recession that everyone is predicting will happen. Take a good look at how you do business now. Could you offer any more services or products that people would want at the moment? How could you remind people that you are still out there, ready to help them? Could you promote your business in cheaper ways than you use now?
In reality, giving your business the best chance of getting through a recession is all about creativity. A lot of the businesses that fail do so because they start believing all the talk about companies going under right, left and center. But you don’t have to lie down and accept that. Be pro-active and think about every cent you are spending on promotion. Is every outgoing justified at this time?
You should also work on providing the best service you possibly can. It’s quite alarming how many businesses don’t do this! But if there are going to be less customers out there you need to be sure you grab the lion’s share of them. That’s why the threat of a recession is the best time to overhaul your business and make it as competitive as you possibly can.
If you haven’t already done so, make sure you have a presence online as well. No matter what country you live in or currency you use, you will notice that less people are spending money on the high street. But the one place they will go to in search of a bargain is the internet. This means that if your business is not there waiting for them, you are going to lose out on a lot of potential business.
Indeed in the current financial climate you cannot afford not to be online. The most important thing is not to get left behind, and that’s what will happen if you don’t have a website of your own.
So do all you can to make sure your business is ahead of the pack. Don’t buy into the scare stories about how a recession will affect businesses. You are in control of yours, so make sure it stands up to scrutiny so the books stay balanced.
